No Bowl

This morning I was the least stiff I’ve been in over a week. At this point with my back I feel like it’s better to do a little something than to take a complete rest day. Especially considering my strength work isn’t very heavy and my intensity isn’t very high when I do workout. Out in the garage at noon.

20:00 Airdyne

Did 570 calories and 11.92 km. Going out to dinner tonight with the gym crew. I will not be going to bowling after.

Something I Can Do!

Sitting hasn’t been the most comfortable the last couple of days and there really hasn’t been any change in how my back is feeling. Went to the 3pm class.

Warm-up

  • 30 cal Assault Bike
  • 10 Bench Press (45#)
  • 10 Bench Press (135#)

Conditioning

E4M – 5 Rounds

  • 20 cal Echo Bike
  • 10 Bench Press (170#)

Oh boy those bench presses turned in to a struggle in round 3. Kept each round unbroken though!

Strength / Accessory

  • 10×2 Strict Pull-ups (2:00)
  • 13×5 Banded PVC Lat Pulldowns (green band doubled over a set of rings)

The workout was 10:00 to do 100 pull-ups, but with five dumbbell thrusters EMOM. My ass is not having anything to do with any type of squatting so I thought I’d see how many strict pull-ups I could do in 10 minutes. As I fatigued I was starting to arch and wanting to kip. That was no bueno, so I called an audible and had about five minutes of the pulldowns. Those created a nice burn.

Waiting

I got the MRI done on my low back yesterday. Much more cramped in there than I was expecting. So now I wait for my appointment on Tuesday or for the Doctor to call with results. Was a rest day yesterday and I could tell I didn’t get in much movement for the day because my back wasn’t very fun. Out in the garage just after 11 today.

40:00 Airdyne

Went 992 calories and 22.33 km. Left the heater on the entire time and I was right next to it, so worked up a good sweat.

Moving Better or Better at Moving?

Feeling about the same. I think the drugs helped me sleep a little better. Went to the gym at 3. Am I moving better or getting better at knowing how to move without causing pain? Does it matter?

Warm-up

  • 2:00 Echo Bike (25 cals)
  • 10 Bench Press (45#)

Conditioning

10 Rounds

  • 10 Bench Press (135#)
  • 20s Dead Hang
  • 14 Walking Lunges
  • 1:00 Rest (only after first 4 rounds)

I had my feet up on the bench to take pressure off my back. It made me feet kind of unstable when I lifted the bar off, but I made it work. I wasn’t breaking a sweat or getting my heart rate up, so after my 5th round I went right in to the 6th without the rest. That made the benching get very challenging for the last 2-3 sets since I was doing them all unbroken. I did 7 lunges out, turned around, and then 7 back. Finished in 18:47.

Midline

4 Sets

  • 20s/20s Side Plank
  • 15 Push-ups
  • 1:00 Rest

Probably didn’t need the push-ups after 100 bench press, but had to come up with something to do on the ground.

Getting Images

I had a terrible sneeze in the evening last night that shot everything up a notch with my back. Sleep was pretty horrible and this morning was the worst yet. So I got back in to the Doctor this morning. Went and got an X-ray and I’m getting an MRI on Wednesday. He think I may have a disc out, which isn’t great, but I’m looking forward to some answer, eliminating the pain, and hopefully correcting my issues. I also got some pain drugs, but not sure I’ll use them or maybe before bed so I can sleep. Went to the gym at 3pm.

Warm-up

  • 5:00 Assault Bike (52 cals)
  • Short step-ups
  • 3 Sets
    • 10/10 Plate Slides (25#)

Conditioning

10 Rounds

  • 1:00 Assault Bike
  • 1:00 Rest

I was using my phone for a timer so it was covering the bike’s monitor, forcing me to go entirely by feel. I did 21-19-17-19-18-19-19-19-20-21 calories.

Strength-ish?

  • 3:00 Banded Bear Hug March (20# MB)
  • 3:00 Rest
  • 3:00 Banded Bear Hug March (20#)

I got 168 and 177 steps. Those might be slightly off because I seemed to lose my spot a few times.

Still far from what I’d call “good,” but I was feeling much looser than early in the day.

Out of the House

Back still terrible. I thought about getting on the treadmill yesterday and walking for 30-60 minutes but decided to fully rest. I was rolling around in bed much better this morning, but not great as soon as I stood up. Hauled my ass to open gym since I hadn’t been out of the house since Wednesday.

Conditioning

20:00 cal Echo Bike

Felt ok. Did 205 cals.

Accessory

5 Sets

  • 20 Alternating Incline DB Curls (15-25-25-30-30#)
  • 20 Banded Pulldowns (green)

Cut Loose

On Wednesday night and Thursday morning my back was feeling pretty bad. I wasn’t comfortable walking around the house. Started getting better in the afternoon, but still really painful moving around. I tried to get up out of my work chair every hour to move and did some of the stretches from the Doctor several times. Glad it was a rest day for me. Last night I slept longer but my back is no better. Moving around in bed through the night was horrible and I can barely get around the house. I tried to jump on the bike at lunch, but a bolt on the pedal assembly kept coming loose, so I called it quits after fiddling with it a few times. Too bad, because it seemed to be loosing up my back.

  • 4:30 Airdyne (91 cals, 2.26 km)
  • 5:30 Airdyne (109 cals, 2.63 km)

In Pain

My back is not feeling very good last night and this morning. Was out of bed at 6am again and went to the gym at 10am.

Warm-up

  • 20 cal Echo Bike
  • 20 PVC Passes

Strength

7 Sets

  • 6/6 Bulgarian Split Squats (2×35# KBs)

Had to really concentrate on my positioning to avoid pain.

Midline

6 Sets (each side)

  • 30s Side Plank
  • 30s Single Leg Balance Hold

Took almost 15 minutes to get through this boring shit!

Conditioning

18:00 EMOM (alt)

  • 12 cal Echo Bike
  • 40s Single Arm Front Rack Carry (R – 26#)
  • 40s Single Arm Front Rack Carry (L – 26#)

Averaged about 442 watts on the bike. Was probably walking 150-200 feet on the carries.

I hope I start getting some relief from this back tomorrow and can do some of the rehab stuff.

Move for 40

I’m switching back to Monday and Thursday rest days. Yesterday I felt my back a little in the morning and then was really favoring it when I shoveled snow. It kept getting worse through the day. Today I was awake early and my back was in full-on tweak mode. Sneezes and coughs sent a shockwave through my body, so this is the worst it’s been in a long time. Finally decided to see the Doctor about my back and got in this morning. He said it’s a classic low back issue and isn’t concerned about anything serious. Got an injection in the area to block the pain and some exercises (which are a very light version of the work I’ve already started doing). Went to the gym at 4pm and did my own thing.

40:00 AMRAP

  • 5 Strict C2B Chin-ups
  • 10 Push-ups
  • 15 cal Echo Bike
  • 20 Walking Lunges

Slowed on the bike from around 65 RPM to 58-59 and maybe took a little more transition time getting up on the bar. Finished 13+24. Forty minutes is a long fucking time!

Becoming Myself Again

Another good night of sleep and I’m feeling a lot more like myself today. Went to open gym at 10am.

Accessory

4 Sets

  • 8/8 Concentration Curls (30#)
  • 8 Lateral Raises (10-12-12-12#)
  • 8 Front Raises (10-12-12-12#)

Gymnastics

15:00 HS Walk

I was having a rough time feeling comfortable even kicking up after not doing any for 2.5 weeks. I made it out to 25 feet for the first time though!!!! Then I came back with what felt like my most comfortable run and got to 20 feet.

Conditioning

  • 3:00 AMRAP w/ partner (I go, you go)
    • 3 Unbroken Power Snatches (115#)
  • 3:00 Rest
  • 3:00 AMRAP w/ partner
    • 3 Unbroken C&J (115#)

I haven’t really touched a barbell in a month or so. I warmed up snatches with triples at 45, 75, and 95 pounds. I started and got through 9 sets of snatches. So B started the second AMRAP. We both got through 9 sets and B got 2 more reps. I actually did push presses instead of jerks for most of the rounds to increase the speed.

Accessory

5 Sets

  • 100′ Single Arm Farmer Carry (88#)
  • 20s RKC Plank

I also did an InBody scan after.
