Push-ups with Hands

Warm-up

  • 3:00 SkiErg (693m)
  • 80′ Lateral Monster Walks
  • 80′ Lateral Monster Walks
  • 3:00 Wrist Warm-up
  • 20 PVC Passes

Conditioning

  • 12-9-6
    • Strict HSPU
    • Box Jump (24/20″)
  • 4:00 Rest
  • 15-12-9
    • HSPU
    • Box Jump Over (24/20″)
  • 4:00 Rest
  • 18-15-12
    • HR Push-up
    • Box Jump (30/24″)

I felt good through most of this. Did 6-6, 5-4, 6 for strict handstand push-ups and finished that part in 2:40. Then went 9-6, 7-5, 9 for kipping handstand push-ups, taking 3:31 for part two. The hand release push-ups felt rough, but I did them slow and unbroken and finished part three in 4:24. Overall time of 18:35.

Midline

3 Rounds

  • 20s Weighted Hollow Flutter Kick (10# plate)
  • 20 Weighted alt V-Ups (10#)
  • 20 Weighted OH Crunches (10#)
  • 20 Russian Twist (10#)
  • 20 Seated Leg Lifts

Slower than the 7:20 I did almost three weeks ago, with 7:58 today.

More Conditioning

2 Rounds

  • 4:00 Row
  • 4:00 BikeErg
  • 4:00 SkiErg

I did 1,044 and 1,049 meters on the rower, 2,096 and 2,113 on the bike, and 961 and 970 on the skier.

Handstand Kick-ups

  • 5 bad leg
  • 5 good leg
  • 2×5 finding balance

Bounce vs. Muscle It

I didn’t sleep very well last night. My abs are getting sore from yesterday. Worked out at 4pm.

Warm-up

  • 5:00 BikeErg (2,450m)
  • 80′ Lateral Monster Walk
  • 80′ Monster Walk

Handstand Balance Breakthrough

  • Wrist Warm-up
  • 2 Sets
    • 20 Banded Arm Circles
  • 3 Sets
    • 2 Handstand Split to Stacked
  • 2 Sets
    • 30s Wall-facing HS Hold

The split to stacked drill felt better than the list time, but still not nearly as good as the kick-ups last week.

Legs

4 Sets

  • 20 DB Walking Lunges (diagonal, 50# DBs)
  • 10/10 Single Leg RDL (foot on wall, 70# KB)

3 Sets

  • 12 Barbell Hip Thrusts (85#)
  • 12/12 Lateral Step-ups (50# DB, 24″)

I bet it’s been at least three years since I’ve done barbell hip thrusts.

  • 12 DB Front Squats (40# DBs)
  • 12/12 Single Leg Calf Raises
  • 12 DB Front Squats
  • 12/12 Single Leg Calf Raises
  • 12/12 Single Leg Calf Raises

I skipped the third set of squats because my back was feeling weird.

Conditioning

2 Rounds

  • 10 Pull-ups
  • 10 Box Jump Overs (24/20″)
  • 15 Hang Power Snatch (75/50#)
  • 10 Box Jump Overs (24/20″)
  • 10 Pull-ups
  • 3:00 Rest

Pull-ups felt great throughout and I can really feel a huge difference when I concentrate on my hips in the kip. I did a lateral jump over the box so I wouldn’t have to keep turning around. The snatches in the first round were not great. I was trying to bounce them off the high pocket position, which was getting to me and slowing me down. The second time around I bounced them off my thighs and did sort of a muscle-ish snatch. First round was 2:00 and second was 1:50, so the snatches were much faster.

Without Rest

Played 18 holes yesterday and rode in a cart, which, I think, was the first time all season. Last night I got over 8 hours of sleep for the first time in over a month. Workout at 4pm with our friend Bryan in town from California.

Handstand Balance Breakthrough

Tris, Bis, & Shoulders

3 Sets

  • 12 EZ Bar Skull Crushers (66#)
  • 12 Hammer Curls (40# DBs)

3 Sets

  • 12 Reverse Grip Tricep Push Downs (60-71-71#)
  • 12 EZ Bar Curls (66#)

3 Sets

  • 12 Wrist Curls (10-12-12#)
  • 16 Shrugs (60# DBs)

Conditioning

3 Rounds

  • Partner A:
    • Row
  • Partner B:
    • 40 Mountain Climbers
    • 16 Box Jump Overs (24/20”)
    • 30 Hollow Rocks
    • 14 Single Arm DB Hang C&J (60/40#)

Bryan started on the rower and I started with the movements. Split the clean and jerks 7/7 per arm. Wanted to use the new 60s I got and it felt good. When I was on the rower I got about 900, 780, and 940 meters. Was pulling 1:50/500m or better. Total time was 18:35. Partner workouts without any real rest are always brutal and this was no exception.

Oh, I also got a bunch of lighter kettlebells to replace the adjustable one.

All the kettlebells.

No B.S.

Yesterday I walked 18 holes on the golf course and was pretty tired from being up late the night before to see Dark Phoenix. Didn’t get enough sleep last night either, but feeling pretty good. Out in the garage to start close to 10:30.

Year of the Engine – Interval

15 Rounds

  • 30s Row
  • 1:00 Rest

Started at 1:32/500m and wanted to see how it went. Felt right, so I stuck to that pace. Definitely a tight back as I got deeper into the intervals, which meant I couldn’t get out of the gate as quick as I normally would and then had to catch up to the pace I wanted. I got 163-164 meters every round.

Strength

Bench Press

  • 5×45#
  • 5×95
  • 5×135
  • 5×165
  • 5×195
  • 4x5x215
  • Max 215 (8)

I’m starting up a cycle (probably two) of the No B.S. Bench Press Program, which has always worked really well. My goal is to bench 300 pounds before I turn 40 at the end of the year. Two weeks ago I matched the 5×245 I did a few weeks before hitting a 290 PR, so I should be pretty close.

The weight felt a little heavy as I worked up and the working sets were a struggle. Maybe I’m fatigued from benching in the workout on Thursday. Was able to get 8 reps on the max set, when it was feeling like 5 or 6 might be today’s limit. Even with the spotter arms I still like to stay away from failure when I’m lifting alone, so 1-2 more reps isn’t out of the question.

Conditioning

12:00 AMRAP

  • 4 Strict C2B Chin-ups (fat bar)
  • 8 Box Jumps Overs (27″)
  • 12 Hand Release Push-ups
  • 16 Reverse Lunges

Good little workout where I was able to get right in to the next movement and keep a steady pace through the entire workout. I got 6 rounds, the chin-ups, and 2 box jumps.

My Highest WHOOP Strain

Didn’t get as much sleep as I’d like last night, but feel pretty good. More importantly I had pancakes for breakfast since it’s Sunday.

Warm-up

  • 5:00 Assault Bike (42 cals)
  • Dead Hang & Shoulder Stretching

Conditioning

  • 4:00 EMOM5 Burpees
    • 5 Strict HSPU
  • 1:00 Rest
  • 3:00 AMRAP10 Goblet Squats (53#)
    • 6 Box Jump Overs (24″)
  • 4:00 Rest, Then Repeat

The burpees should be very fast to create fatigue going into the strict handstand push-ups. I was able to get every set of HSPU unbroken, but the last set in the first cycle was hard and then the last 2-3 sets in the 2nd cycle were a struggle. My quads got super pumped during the goblet squats. In the first cycle I was marking off rounds on the board, which just wasted time in such a short workout. Skipped that in the second cycle and did better. I did 3+12 and then exactly 4 rounds.

Accessory

3 Sets

  • 50′ KB Dead Walk (44# KBs)
  • 50′ KB Walking Lunges (44# KBs)
  • Dumbbell Curl 21s (25#)

Got some of the idea here from a T-Nation article and video.

Midline

3 Rounds

  • 20 Hollow Rocks
  • 50 Hollow Flutter Kicks
  • 30 Plank Jumps
  • 30 Russian Twists (20kg plate)
  • 1:00 Rest

My upper abs were cramping up from the combination of hollow rocks and flutter kicks. Was able to do every movement unbroken, with my only extra break being between the rocks and kicks is the third round. Finished in 7:41.

Went golfing and played a quick 18 holes in a cart.

Engine Builder – Interval

3 Rounds

  • 5:00 Airdyne
  • 1:00 Rest

I wanted to shoot for 82-83 RPM and my average was probably close. I got 173-174-177 calories and went 6.09 miles or 9,800 meters.

All of the activity made for my highest strain day on WHOOP so far and since I waited so late to publish this, it won’t go up much more tonight.

Burning 4,500 calories was a good excuse to get some ice cream. 🙂

Home with a Hangover

Rested on Friday, traveled home yesterday with a nasty hangover, which I’m still suffering from today! Went to the gym at noon.

Gymnastics Strength

5 Sets

  • 7 Weighted Pull-ups (15#)
  • 7 Weighted Ring Dips (15#)

Felt really rough!

Conditioning

8:00 EMOM

  • 15 Air Squats
  • AMRAP Box Jump Overs (30″)

Inspired by a Jacob Heppner workout. I was having a hard time counting my AMRAP reps with such a high buy-in count. Came up with 69 reps, but I may have had a few more.

Midline

4 Rounds

  • 10 Hollow Rocks
  • 10 V-ups
  • 10 Tuck-ups
  • 10s Hollow Hold
  • 1:00 Rest

Got through the first two rounds unbroken. Ended up with the same time I had a few weeks ago with 6:34.

Active Life – Bulletproof Shoulders 20

Skipped ahead a workout.

3 Sets

  • 100m Single Arm Overhead Carry (53# KB)
  • 90s Rest

Started off going back and forth in the gym and it was brutal, so after the first arm, we went outside. I was thinking, “Wow, those 10 turnarounds really add up to a lot more time under tension.” Then I realized I calculated wrong, thinking the floor mats were only 3 feet wide when they are 4! So probably went 130-140 meters that first trip. Wasn’t bad when we did the correct distance.

Not Dairy Queen

Long day yesterday! Went to open gym at noon today.

Gymnastics Strength

5 Sets

  • 5 Weighted Pull-ups (20#)
  • 5 Weighted Ring Dips (20#)

I used a far bar for my pull-ups.

Conditioning

3 Rounds

  • 1:00 Box Jump Overs (24″)
  • 30s Rest
  • 1:00 Hand-to-hand KBS (44#)
  • 30s Rest
  • 1:00 Russian Twists (44#)
  • 30s Rest
  • 1:00 Single Arm S2OH (44#)
  • 30s Rest

Didn’t expect it to hurt so much, but should have known with interval work. I went 23-22-23 on the box jumps, 32-33-34 on the kettlebell swings, 50-54-58 on the Russian twists, and 30-30-34 on the shoulder to overheads. I did a mixture of push jerks and push presses depending on how fast I wanted to rep them out.

We might not be Dairy Queen, but we have pretty good Sundays.

Midline

4 Rounds

  • 10 Hollow Rocks
  • 10 V-ups
  • 10 Tuck-ups
  • 10s Hollow Hold
  • 1:00 Rest

**Try to do each round unbroken

Realized we had been missing out on the rest the last couple of times we did this. Also forgot that you’re supposed to keep your feet off the ground and reach out overhead on the tuck-ups. I got through the first two rounds unbroken, but then had to break it up a bunch on rounds three and four. Finished in 6:34.

All 40 Minutes

My outer pecs started getting sore early afternoon yesterday, must be from all of those push presses. Had a fun day and got some sun. In with the crew at noon today.

Warm-up

  • 3×10 Reverse Hyper (140#)
  • Bottom Squat Hold
  • 6 Power Cleans (45#)
  • 6 Power Cleans (95#)

Conditioning

40:00 AMRAP

  • 6 Power Cleans (115#)
  • 8 Box Jump Overs (no touch, 18″)
  • 10 Ring Dips
  • 8 Box Jump Overs (no touch, 18″)
  • 6 Power Cleans 115/75#
  • 400m Run

I’ve been wanting to program something really long for a couple of months and was finally able to fit it in. I did fast singles on the cleans the entire workout. Ring dips were 2×5, except one round I lost focus and did 6-4.  Was watching my splits and kept a pretty steady pace right from round 1. Finished 8+18, which makes 102 cleans, 136 jump overs, 84 ring dips, and 2 miles of running. I have a feeling the effects of this one will hit me in a few hours.

Midline – 5 Sets

  • 5 Evil Wheels
  • 20 Leg Lifts
  • 40 Flutter Kicks

For the last 3 sets of flutter kicks, I held a hollow while doing them. I had been keeping my hands under my ass for the first 2 rounds.

Quick Triplets

Spent the rest of the day cleaning and reorganizing the garage yesterday. To say I was tired is an understatement. My shoulders are definitely feeling the fatigue.

Warm-up

  • Bottom Squat Hold
  • Shoulder Stretching
  • 3×10 Reverse Hyper (140#)
  • Bottom Squat Hold
  • C&J
    • 5×45#
    • 3×85#
    • 3×135#
    • 2×155#

Gymnastics Test

  • MAX Strict Ring Dips

Wanted to see what I could do since it had been years since I tried. I got 21, which is a 6 rep PR. I actually did this before the clean & jerk warm-ups.

Conditioning – Running Clock

  • @ 0:00
    • 10 C&J (170/115#)
    • 20 Burpees over the Bar (lateral)
    • 30 Box Jump Overs (24/20″)
  • @ 15:00
    • 10 Power Snatch (145/100#)
    • 20 T2B
    • 30 Wall Balls (20/14#, 10/9′)
  • @ 30:00
    • 10 Bar Muscle-ups
    • 20 American KBS (53/35#)
    • 30 Back Squats (95/65#)
  • @ 45:00
    • 10 Strict HSPU
    • 20 Burpees
    • 30 Thrusters (45/35#)

The first part is one we had during the Hybrid Open Prep, when I did it in 3:34. I didn’t bitch out on the box jumps today doing all 30 as side-to-side jumps. Pretty sure my C&J and burpees were slower, but the jumps was enough to make up for it. Finished in 3:27.

The next 3 parts are all original creations, with the hopes of being around the some time domain. In part 2 I did my toes to bars in 10-5-5 mostly due to knowing that bar muscle-ups were coming in the next piece. Did the wall balls unbroken to finish in 3:07.

I was going back and forth on how to split my muscle-ups. 6-4 or 4-3-3? I decided to go for it with the 6-4, which was fine. I’m going to have to test my bar MU max because the 6 matches the most I’ve done in a set. The kettlebell swings were rougher than expected, but the squats were such a burn. I tried to speed up but there was too much burn when I did. Finished in 3:14.

I wanted to do the handstand push-ups strict, but wasn’t sure how I’d feel by part 4. I went for it and got through them no problem. Big mistake though. In the middle of the burpees I was having trouble pushing off the ground. I’m sure the fatigue of yesterday had something to do with it too. When I got to the thrusters, I was dying on the presses! I rested in the bottom of the squat a couple of times and once with the bar on my back. Should have been much faster than the 3:12 it took me.

I figured the back squats and thrusters would be the easiest part of the whole thing but they were the worst because they burned so bad.

Triples

Upper body is still a little sore. Hit the gym at 5pm.

Clean & Jerk

Find a daily 3RM.

  • 3×45#
  • 3×95
  • 3×135
  • 3×165
  • 3×195
  • 3×225
  • 3×245
  • 3×260

Was content at 245# but Bryan wanted to go up, so I said couldn’t let him go alone. Cleans were fine the whole way. Jerks were a little wobbly. According to my BTWB history I’ve done 265 for a double, but don’t have any big triples. Had to be a pretty big PR.

Clean Pull

Supposed to be at a minimum 120% of max clean for 3×3. Haha, yeah right.

  • 3×285#
  • 3×305
  • 3×320
  • 3×330

Got up to over 115% on the last set, which is a lot more than I’ve ever used for clean pulls.

Split Jerk

Another 3RM for the day!

  • 3×205#
  • 3×235
  • 3×265

I really don’t have any heavy records for doubles or triples that I can find, so I think this was a really big PR too. Called it quits before pushing too hard. I didn’t feel like I had much more, if any, left in me.

Conditioning

  • 10 C&J (170#)
  • 20 Burpees over the Bar (lateral)
  • 30 Box Jump Overs (24″)

We completely read the programming wrong all week (Hybrid Performance writes their workouts really weird) and it was looking like some insane workout with 60 C&J, but Weston set us straight.

This was a quick one with no time to slow down. The clean and jerks went faster than I expected, doing all singles. I tried to keep up my pace on the burpees, but slowed for a few reps around 10. I gave in for some of the first half of the box jumps and was taking too much time to almost stand all the way up, and jump down facing the wrong way so I’d have to turn around. Got the quicker cycling side jumps going for the second half because I knew it would be over soon. Finished in 3:34.
