I had a massage from Cora earlier today, which usually translates into good deadlifting and today was no exception. Went to open gym.

Warm-up

Did a bunch of jump roping and double unders.

Strength

5×3 Deadlift

Warmed up with 10 at 135# and then hit 3 reps at 225#, 315#, 345#, 365#, and 385#. My goal for the day was to hit 385# which is supposed to translate into about a 425# 1RM, which is 10# over my current max. The reps at 385# were pretty easy so Matt convinced me to go for 405#. Once I got it moving it wasn’t much of a problem. But I started to lose the grip on the way up in my second rep and just couldn’t hang on through the 3rd one, so I had to bail on it. The strength was there though, so that’s good.

My low back didn’t feel very good on the set at 345#, so I was kind of worried, but the rest of the way it felt fine. 405# for 2 reps is supposed to come out to 430# for a 1RM and 3 reps to 445#, so I should be able to make a nice jump the next time around. Not sure I’ll be able to get it done next week since I leave for Arizona.

Explosion Training

Casey and I rigged up a box with mats and started doing max height jumps over a PVC pipe. I made it over 54″ without much trouble, but then my footwork got all messed up and my head got in the way. Was fun to do and a lot safer than jumping that high on to boxes.

I wanted to get in some Olympic lifting work since we hadn’t done any all week. Was only planning on going for 10 minutes, but it felt good, so I added 4 more minutes. The cleans started to get tough, but overall this wasn’t that taxing on the cardio, which is fine since those heavy deadlifts and high jumps took a lot out of me. I’m sure tomorrow will be a nice long met-con anyway.

I partnered up with Casey and we did well. I started off first and got through 6 full rounds, then Casey got through 3 of his burpees clean thrusters before time ran out, so we had 5 + 27 to top the board. Having those thrusters and wall balls back to back was pretty brutal. Each round I’d start out fast on the burpee clean thrusters, but that would only last for 3 or 4 reps and then it was just a grind.

I was able to get through mine all the way, for a total of 108. Not sure why, but it felt worse than doing 100 in a row the other day. Maybe it’s because of the other day!

Hobbit Friday

Took the day off work to go see The Hobbit in IMAX 3D and I’m well rested after taking yesterday off. Went in to open gym tonight. All I did for a warm-up were some PVC pass-thrus.

Alternated sets between bench press and the deficit deadlifts.

That’s a new high for 3 reps, up from only being able to hit 215# for 2 reps last cycle. These didn’t feel that great this week either, which is two weeks in a row it’s been a struggle.

The 415# pull matches my 1RM for regular deadlifts. As I went for it, I didn’t think I was going to get it moving because it was really slow to start. Once it got above the deficit it felt smooth though.

WOD

This was a workout I made up and Matt used for the box today, so I had to give it a try even though I planned to do death by snatch.

The goal of the cleans was to cycle them without dropping the bar, so I chose 115# instead of the Rx 135#. I also wanted to keep my time under 10:00 so felt I had a good shot by dropping down in weight. I finished in 8:50. Was able to do all of the cleans while holding the bar and the hops were a piece of cake for me. The push-ups on the other hand sucked. Got pretty tough around the middle of WOD. After getting done I’m kind of curious what my time would have been with 135#.

I’m really happy with how the design of this WOD turned out. I figured some of the top scores would be under 10 minutes and they were. A lot of people finished around 12-15 minutes from the scores on the whiteboard. The use of the barbell didn’t overpower the WOD, so you could still get out quality cleans even in the 10th round, but the push-ups were a great challenge. The lateral hops were just enough high intensity to string it all together.

Find 1RM Front Squat

After hitting my previous 1 rep max (235#) for 3 reps last week, I was looking for a nice PR today. Warmed up with 6 reps at 135# and then went 185#, 215#, 235#, 245#, and 255# for a 20# PR. It was pretty easy too.

I went Rx with 115# and finished just under the time limit with 25:45. Pretty happy with that because a long barbell complex in far from my strength and I held my own. I’ll be feeling that one in my legs for a few days.

OLY and Solo Garage

My lower back is a bit sore from the RDLs yesterday so maybe since we were doing them fast I wasn’t doing them quite right. This is the first Tuesday in a long time where my legs aren’t killing me in some way from squat Monday.

Went to the OLY class at 6pm and worked on snatches for the entire hour by doing a full snatch and then a hang snatch. Hang snatches are so much harder, but really force you to be explosive. I worked up to 145# and couldn’t get the hang snatch, so dropped back down to 95 and worked back up again. Didn’t even attempt the hang snatch at 145# the second time around, but did bump up to 155# and tried a couple of full snatches. I’ve hit a 155# power snatch in competition, but never really tried to drop under one in the snatch. Missed both tries, but was pretty close on the second one. Not too disappointed though especially after doing an hour of snatches already.

I got home and did a WOD in the garage because I didn’t want to do a full hour-long class.

That was a fun one. Kept up a fast pace on the rows with consistent times through every round. Got all of the handstand push-ups, but struggled with #5 in the fourth round because I stopped when my head hit the ground for some reason and then it was a little tough to get going. I got done with the HSPU right around 1 minute each time, so once I setup on the bar had 50 or 55 seconds for the cleans. The last few reps of each round were a real struggle.

I really like coming up with new combinations and structures for WODs. Keeps things interesting and fun.

Sixth Double Day

Today is the 6th day in a row where I’ve done two workouts. I’m actually feeling good though and have been smart about them for the most part.

Went to OLY class at 6pm and worked on the clean and jerk by doing singles of:

  • Clean Deadlift
  • Hang Clean
  • Jerk

I worked my way up in weight doing at least 2 or 3 before increasing the load. After one at 195# I stopped doing the jerks because they were starting to bother my shoulders. I got up to a 205# for a couple of singles and stopped there. Have never done hang cleans even close to that heavy, but they felt good and really forced me to work on getting under the bar quick to receive it in the squat.

Stayed right after for the 7pm class.

I finished 21 rounds + the 3 cleans, 6 push-ups, and 3 of the air squats. I’ll take it after doing an hour of clean and jerks just before. Glad I didn’t try to Rx this at 135# because it would have been bad. Using 115# allowed me to focus on keeping a good back position and cycling the reps without dropping the bar after each rep. The push-ups weren’t a problem, but my squats were kind of slow after the first couple of rounds.

Feeling good today after getting a good night’s sleep in my own bed. Went in at 10am for another Kevin WOD.

Find 1RM Clean & Jerk

Felt pretty good so I went for it on my last attempt. After catching the clean I sat in the bottom of the squat for at least a second or two and felt like I nearly choked myself. I powered through the squat, which is only 10# below my last 1RM in the front squat. Set myself up for the jerk, but the clean took a lot out of me. I’ve only done 205# once in the jerk and never even attempted 225#, so confidence probably played a bit into the miss too. Next time! That was another 10# PR in the clean over the 215# that I just hit last weekend.

Barbell Complex

Up and at ’em for the 9am today. I’m sore from Saturday’s death by pull-ups and from bench pressing yesterday. We are stepping away from strength for the week to recover and confuse the body. Good timing since it’s Thanksgiving week. My cardio and endurance has been a bit lacking, so this is a good chance to kick it back up a notch.

I was paired up with Kevin and we had 115# on the bar. He had to bow out, switching to a lighter bar and slowing down around 10 minutes, so I switched to doing a round every other minute on the minute. I think I had 4 rounds in during the partner portion and then I worked the last two minutes in a row to end up with a total of 14 rounds plus 5 deadlifts, 5 bent rows, and 5 hang power cleans. It may have only been 13 full rounds because I’m not sure where we made the switch.

After the first couple of rounds I fell into a rhythm and was consistently getting 55 second rounds. I had never done a good morning in my life so that took some time getting used to. I smoked through the hang power cleans early on, but in those last few rounds it was a struggle to get that bar up. I’m left feeling sick after this WOD, that’s for sure.

I got 48 of them, with 16 in each minute I think, so pretty consistent. Not bad with only a few minutes of rest after the WOD.

Garage Cleans

I’ve wanted to do some cleans for the last week or so. We planned to do some after the class today but we were all feeling pretty shitty and too hung over after a tough WOD. I sat around all afternoon watching the Michigan game and then decided to head out to the garage. Mind you, I hadn’t eaten anything all day except for a couple of bars and my protein shakes, so I was a little weak and fucking starving.

Olympic Lifting Class

Went in at 6pm for the OLY class. We worked on snatches by doing progressions with the empty bar. Then we loaded up to a moderate weight and did:

5 Rounds

  • 2 Snatch Balances
  • 3 Snatch Grip Deadlifts

I started with 95# for the first three rounds and then 105# for the next two rounds. After that we worked on full squat snatch singles. I loaded 115# and tried to work on my technique. Then to finish the class we worked up to a heavy snatch grip deadlift triple. Wow is that a bitch on your thumbs! I did 3 sets, 2 @ 205# and 1 at 235# (I think). I don’t remember all of the weights exactly for any of the lifts.

Used KBs for each round and went 53#, 62#, 71#, 80#, and 88#. I got 17 reps with my right arm and 22 with my left if I remember right.

No extra rest in between each 10 minute block; the minutes keep going.

A Rich Froning style workout and I loved it. The EMOTM stuff really allows you to go all out balls to the wall when it’s work time and the rest period is just short enough to recover.

The weight was almost perfect for me. Maybe could have gone 5 or 10# heavier because I flew through the 7 reps in those first 10 minutes, getting them done in about 12 or 13 seconds each time. After 2 rounds of burpees, I figured out why I’ve been so slow lately. I’ve been standing all the way up before jumping. It was taking me 30-31 seconds to get my 10 reps done, which is extremely slow compared to how I’ve done them before when doing 10 at a time. Well, I switched back to jumping as soon as my feet snap up to my hands and shaved 6 seconds of my 10 rep split, right back into my 24 second wheel house. Did all of the T2B unbroken and concentrated on a short kip at the bottom to cycle them faster.
