Pick Things Up

Walked 18 holes yesterday in the heat. Over the last three holes my left calf really started to bother me and I was limping on it the rest of the day. It feels better today.

Warm-up

  • 5:00 SkiErg (1,078m)
  • 160′ Lateral Monster Walks
  • 160′ Monster Walks
  • 20 PVC Passes
  • 10 C&J (45#)
  • 5 C&J (95#)
  • 3 C&J (115#)

Weightlifting

  • 5:00 EMOM
    • 2 C&J (135-145-155-165-175#)
  • 5:00 EMOM
    • 1 C&J (195-205-225-235-245#)

In May I did a 10:00 EMOM of 3×155 power cleans, back in December I did 3×225 power cleans in a workout, and in September I did a power clean and push jerk with 245. I hadn’t lifted heavy in a very long time, but I’ve been wanting to for months. Today was finally the day.

The lifts felt pretty good overall, doing power cleans and push jerks for ever rep. I stopped doing touch-n-go with the doubles because I could feel it coming down for the second rep. Then I could feel some of the heavier jerks a bit. Having the 55# plates on the bar was really fucking up my math. After reviewing video I screwed up the second single, which I’d planned to be 215. But I guess I course corrected for the next weight. Thrilled to hit those weights after not lifting heavy all of 2020 so far due to my back issues.

Strength / Conditioning

4 Cycles

  • 3 Sets (each, I Go You Go)
    • 16 Plyo Lunges (30# DBs)
  • 1:00 Rest

Last time I used 35# for two cycles and 20# for two cycles. We think Brandi wore a vest for two rounds and then took it off. We finished in 12:56 that day. I was hoping I’d be able to survive with 30# the whole way today and barely did. B wore the 8# vest the entire time. Our splits were 1:45, 1:45, 1:47, and 1:51 for a time of 10:08. So a harder version and we crushed our time. Those are pretty consistent splits too! I had to rest a few seconds extra before picking up the dumbbells for that last set or I wasn’t going to make it unbroken.

Midline

3 Rounds

  • 1:00 Hollow Hold
  • 1:00 Russian Twists
  • 1:00 Leg Raises
  • 30s/30s Side Plank
  • 1:00 Prayer Crunches
  • 1:00 Rest

I based this off an old warm-up I’d done at Survival Fitness in 2012. I wasn’t thinking when I put the hollow hold back to back with twists. Oww! I held that first hollow for the entire minute to see if I could and I paid for it the rest of the way.

Then it was cookie time with a shake for post workout recovery. Everything from Phat Ash Bakes is amazing!

C2B and American KBS Back in Action

Surprisingly I’m not all that sore from the leg killer workout yesterday. I can feel some in my upper glutes, but my scaps are more sore than anything.

Warm-up

  • CS Activation (at home)
  • Shoulder Stretching
  • Arm Circles

Strength

Bench Press

  • 10×45#
  • 3×95#
  • 3×95# wide grip
  • 3×95# close grip
  • Speed Bench w/30-35s rest
    • 3x3x135# wide grip
    • 2x3x135#
    • 3x3x135# close grip
  • 8×185# close grip

First time putting any significant weight on the bar for that set of 185# and it felt pretty good. No struggle with the weight.

Conditioning

  • 20 C2B Pull-ups
  • 30 American KBS (53# KB)
  • 40 SDHP (53# KB)
  • 50 DB Push Presses (35# DBs)
  • 20 C2D Push-ups
  • 30 American KBS
  • 500m Run
  • 20 Burpees
  • 30 V-ups
  • 15 Ring Dips
  • 50 DU
  • 20 C2B Pull-ups

First time doing C2B and American KBS. My kip kept turning into a swing after about 4 reps in that first set of 20 though. Scaled down the push presses from the Rx 45# since I’m still trying to take it a little easy, especially with adding back in 2 movements in one day. Got my 50 DU unbroken, which is sweet at that point in a workout. Finished in 21:34.

Went back at 8pm for barbell club. Did CS Activation again before leaving home.

45# Snatch Position Work

  • Snatch Deadlifts
  • Muscle Snatches
  • Snatch Presses

5:00 EMOM

  • 135# Snatch w/ 3s pause in the hole
  • 2 OHS

Was supposed to go 10:00 but my wrists couldn’t take it. Not used to holding weight overhead yet.

Power Snatches

  • 2×145#
  • F-1×155#
  • 1×165#
  • 1×175#
  • 3x1x155#
  • 1-F-1-1×165#

Feet were getting too wide, which really sucks for squatting with it. After 175# figured it was more worthwhile to drop down and work on some fixes. Also allowed me to work on keeping my arms relaxed and try not to bend my elbows early. When I don’t pull early with my arms, the bar just flies up. I nearly lost a few reps behind me.

Grabbed the empty bar and did 5 OHS with a jerk grip. Lost some mobility with the time away from OH.

Can You Donate Some Dollars?

This Saturday is CrossFit for Hope, which is an event based around raising money for St. Jude Children’s Hospital. CrossFitters around the world will be doing the “Hope” WOD and are taking donations and pledges. If you have a few spare bucks to donate, I have a big box over in the right sidebar linking to the page where you can sponsor me. St. Jude is a great cause and does a ton to advance cancer research. I’m trying to raise $300, so anything you can do is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

It felt great to take a rest day yesterday. It was tough not doing anything, but I know it’s for the best.

Warm-up

Tabata Mash-up

  • Broad Jumps
  • Rock Climbers

Haven’t done either of these exercises in quite some time. Both are pretty taxing.

WOD

  • 250m Run
  • 50 Tuck Jumps
  • 50 Plank Push-ups
  • 250m Run
  • 40 Lunges
  • 40 Prayer Crunches
  • 250m Run
  • 30 SDLHP (71# KB)
  • 30 K2E
  • 250m Run
  • 20 Burpee Box Jumps (24″)
  • 20 Ring Rows
  • 250m Run
  • 10 Pull-ups
  • 10 Curtis P’s (40# DBs)
  • 250m Run

I’d never done plank push-ups or Curtis P’s before and to be honest, I won’t be mad if I never have to do them again. Haha! Both were tough on me. My time was 24:48.

Ab Finisher

  • 1m Side Plank (R)
  • 10 V-ups
  • 1m Side Plank (L)
  • 10 V-ups
  • 45s Side Plank (R)
  • 11 V-ups
  • 45s Side Plank (L)
  • 11 V-ups
  • 30s Side Plank (R)
  • 12 V-ups
  • 30s Side Plank (L)
  • 12 V-ups
  • 15s Side Plank (R)
  • 13 V-ups
  • 15s Side Plank (L)
  • 13 V-ups

My tailbone and the surrounding areas still have some issues, so the V-ups were pretty brutal, not to mention there was a total of 90 of them. I got through them though.

Today was a great WOD and finisher that hit a lot of areas.

Reebok hasn’t shipped my CrossFit Nano 2.0 shoes yet. I wonder what the hold-up is. I did call Zappos to check on the status of the Inov-8s I had to return and they are actually crediting my credit card for them. I figured they were giving me a credit to use on another pair of shoes. I love Zappos!

Prowler Sprints

I wasn’t feeling all that motivated today when I was deciding which class to attend tonight. I’m not sure if the busy day with multiple WODs yesterday or walking 18 holes of golf this morning took a lot out of me. I ended up going to the 5:30pm class and felt fine once I got moving.

Warm-up

3 rounds

  • 1m MB Russian Twists
  • 1m MB V-ups
  • 1m Plank
  • 1m Bicycles
  • 1m “Mystery”
  • 1m Rest

I used a 20# MB for Russian twists and V-ups. Each round, the “Mystery Move” changed; first we did side planks, then flutter kicks, and ended with prayer crunches. I was really feeling a burn during this ab circuit due to the leg lifts I did yesterday.

WOD

50 reps of each

  • Air Squats
  • Burpees
  • Box Jumps
  • KBS (Russian)
  • Close-grip HR Push-ups
  • Plyo Lunges
  • Pull-ups
  • Sit-ups

I used a 24″ box and a 53# KB. Since I flew through everything, I did full sit-ups to make it harder. I finished in 23:22 and then did 12 reps on the GHD as a bonus.

The close-grip HR push-ups were a bit awkward because you have to keep the hands far enough apart that you can lift them off the ground when your chest is laying down. Pull-ups felt really good and my kip is getting dialed in. I need to learn those butterfly pull-ups soon.

Strength

10 Sets

  • High grip Prowler sprint
  • Low grip Prowler sprint
  • Rest

Finally I got to use the Prowler! I probably won’t be too excited when I feel the effects tomorrow. Stayed after class a bit to finish these. The Prowler was loaded with 180# of weights so I’m guessing over 200# total. The distance was probably 25-30 yards each way. The high grip wasn’t too bad, but the low grip took everything I had to get the Prowler moving, was much slower pushing, and got harder each time. Here’s a video of Casey and I. I’m shown first pushing it back to our starting line.
