The 2 Girls

I woke up sore in my low back and wasn’t expecting it. Has to be from throwing my 2 nieces around all day yesterday because I don’t think I’ve been sore there from lunges or push-ups before. I’m definitely also sore in my glutes and hips from the lunges and my shoulders feel a little tired from the push-ups. Was tired from the combination and the drive home last night so slept in. Went to the chiropractor before hitting the 5:30 class.

Warmed up with 5 thrusters at 45# and 95#.

  • Rest to normal breathing

I did everything unbroken. My rounds were finished at 0:27-1:50-3:27-5:13-6:50, which comes out to the last 4 rounds of rest plus work being 1:23-1:37-1:45-1:37. I did the first two rounds of chest to bar butterfly and then switched to kipping for the last 3 rounds. The thrusters were the easy part and might have been able to go with 155#.

Both ways using high handles on the prowler. I didn’t stop at the turn-around on my carries and went unbroken. The tire flips were almost effortless. I pretty much went from movement to movement without taking extra rest.

Team Series Event 4

Was planning a rest day but we had an opening to get in a workout for the CrossFit Team Series. I didn’t do a whole lot to warm-up. Some bottom squat holds, some stretching, and a few thrusters.

15:00 AMRAP

  • Male 1 and Female 1 each perform:
    • 5 thrusters (95/65#)
    • 5 chest-to-bar pull-ups
  • Then, Male 2 and Female 2 each perform:
    • 10 thrusters
    • 10 chest-to-bar pull-ups

Michelle and Bryan went first with the 5s and then Jess and I with the 10s. We ended up 4 reps shy of finishing the sets of 30 for a total of 416 reps.

Wasn’t as bad as we were expecting because you got a lot of rest when the other pair was going. I think I went 10, 10-10, and 9-8-7-6 on my thrusters. The sets of 20 and 30 C2B sucked!

Over the course of the week I toyed around with different rep schemes before finally settling on this one. Worked out great. Was a solid little burner. I went 12, 5-4, and 3-3 on the C2B. They got really hard after the OHS. Fought to get every set of squats unbroken. Finished in 3:07.

* Light enough to put all weight on foot that is on the box. Do not push off the ground with the other leg.

If I would have gone any heavier I think I would have been pushing off with my other leg. This allowed me to focus on working the one leg.

Run Every Day

2 Mile Run

We rarely ever do “longer” runs in CrossFit, so I figured I’d get in my run for the day and have everyone share in the fun. I started out a little too hot, but fell into a decent pace during the first mile. RunKeeper (log) said about 7:26. I started falling off in the 2nd mile, but tried to make up for it in the last 1/4 of a mile. Finished the 2 miles in about 15:18. I would have liked to be close to 14:30, but not too bad. Curious how different my time would have been if we ran first thing.

Midline

Changing up instead of 20/10s was much better. Allowed me to keep going throughout. Got 11 reps ever round for 88 total.

Like Butta

Got up and was laced up by 8. Went 2.01 miles in 19:06. I don’t really enjoy the morning runs like I enjoyed getting up and squatting every morning. I definitely felt like I was still sleeping out there.

Gym at 6 after an appointment at the chiro, which I’m not sure I need anymore. My back has been good to go. Warmed up with 100 walking lunges.

I took 8 minutes to warm up through the 175#, rested 2 minutes, and then did the last 5 lifts going every 2 minutes to simulate what we’ll be doing on Saturday. Didn’t lift with the weightlifting bars or bumpers either. Lifts felt smooth and everything was locked in solid. No misses. Wasn’t afraid of the weight at all like I was last week. Most I’ve put up since the 210# PR in October. Looking forward to seeing what I can do on Saturday with the adrenaline pumping.

I partnered with Jason and went first. I was done with my run at 18:02. Forgot to look at the clock when he finished us off. Was pulling about a 1:50 on my first few rows, then about 1:45 on the 4th one and low 1:40 on my last one.

We did sets of 7s in the 42. Jason did something to his shoulder with 1 thruster left. So then I did 24 of the 30 chest-to-bar pull-ups. We went sets of 5 on the 30 thrusters, I did 14 or 15 of the 18 pull-ups, and then each did 5-4 thrusters. Finished in 10:44 but with Jason getting hurt there was a lot of extra rest time. Not sure why he tried to keep going. 😦

I walked 200m to cool down.

I pretty much always do my strict pull-ups chest-to-bar now. Why stop with just the chin over the bar if it’s a manageable number of reps?

Strength

Was supposed to be an alternating EMOM of bench press and Pendlay rows. Since we bench after class I wasn’t going to do more in class. I figured I’d hit some taller box jumps I warmed up with 5 jumps at 24″ and 10×45#, 5×135#, and 2×185# for Pendlay rows. I made it through a round of 5×185# rows and 10 box jumps at 30″. After 2 reps on the 2nd round of rows my back tweaked hard. WTF! Would never have expected to do anything with this movement since the back is pretty much just holding a stable position. Guess I wasn’t doing those movements anymore today, so I switched over to the RH.

Had a goal to go unbroken the whole way and did. Finished in 7:08.

Class did a tabata plank hold, so I made it a goal to not rest at all. Made it through the entire 4 minutes to beat my PR old 2:57 hold on the elbows.

No B.S. Bench Press

Week 5 of the program. Shoulders and upper body were already warm from the workout, so didn’t need much to get going.

Soaring Bench

Sore abs from the sit-ups and GHDs yesterday. Had an appointment at the chiropractor and then went to the 5:30 class.

They were supposed to be hand release burpees and most of them were, but I didn’t realize I wasn’t doing the hand-release until the 10th rep in and then I know I missed at least a few in other sets. I broke up the 30 KBS into 20-10 but everything else was unbroken. Finished in 9:31.

Week 4 so it was time to retest the max rep set. My max reps were 10 in week 1, so that’s a 50% increase! Was not expecting such a jump, especially after a metcon that was rough on the shoulders. I’m excited to see what my 1RM is after the 9 weeks. All of the working sets felt solid.

15.2 Again

Rested yesterday so I could take another shot at this. Got up early to get it in so that I could participate in Super Sunday. Got to the gym at about 8:30. Totally forgot about the stupid time change and I was up until after 11 watching the Duke-UNC game, so not much sleep. 🙂

I wore a pair of the Natural Grips instead of the leather gymnastics grips, thinking they are thinner so would be better on the grip. Not sure either set made any big difference. Just didn’t want to rip at all costs.

Much better plan of attack today. All c2b were kipping today instead of butterfly, which I think fatigues me more. I did 5, rested 5 seconds on the back, then 5 more on both sets of 10 OHS and all singles pull-ups. Had 30-40 seconds of rest I think. Went 12 unbroken OHS and all doubles on the first set of C2B I think. Then 12 OHS again or possibly 6, rest 5 seconds, last 6. I don’t really remember. I think I did a couple of doubles, then all the rest singles. Had 23 seconds to rest. I know I could finish those no problem. I just died then. Dropped the bar 4 times during the set of 14 OHS and did all single chest to bar pull-ups. Finished them with like 3 seconds left and fell to the floor. 116 reps, which is 8 less than last year, but it’s all I had on this day. I’ll take it. Bring on 15.3!

Went home, got some food, and rested. Back for Super Sunday at noon.

Warmed up with some stretching, rumble rolling, bottom squat holds. Then some 45# and 95# pendlay rows.

Paired up with Dan. He would start getting off the rower after 55 seconds and by the time I was on and ready to go I had 55 seconds left. We split up the other two movements in 30 second chunks. I didn’t count anything, just went for it when it was my turn. Dropped the bar early on the c&J, but then ended each interval going the last 10-12 seconds touch-n-go. I didn’t think I’d have much left in the tank to push, but I did and it felt good. Didn’t keep track of any reps or anything, which was nice to just do work.

Stuck around to judge some 15.2 scores. I can definitely feel my quad now, about 90 minutes after the workout.

Rest day tomorrow, but probably with some active recovery.

A repeat of 14.2, which I tried a few weeks ago with horrible results. Tried another new strategy today, based off Outlaw’s tips for this year. Worked great and I was hitting perfect paces all the way up until the 2nd set of 12 C2B pull-ups, when I had to go to singles. Ended up being 3 reps shy of getting to the 14s. Yuck, now I have to redo this bitch. I did 4-3-3 on both sets of 10 OHS, then 3-3-2-2 and 2-2-2-2-2 on C2B Pull-ups. 4-4-4 on both sets of 12 OHS, then 3-3-2-2-2 on the first set of C2B, and I think I got in a double or triple to start the final set before it all went to shit. When I redo I won’t break up the 12 OHS like that and I’ll have the time I need to finish and go to the pain cave for the 14s.

Oh, so I guess that was 85 reps.

After judging for the next groups and everyone left I needed some redemption, so did a 250m row to warm-up and then this happened…

I had thought my previous best was 3:12-something, so wanted to hold a 1:35 as long as possible and then fight with whatever I had left at the end. Turns out that my best was actually a 3:16.1! I forgot how terrible the last 3-400 meters get. I felt like I was driving my legs so hard to keep up my pace, but I kept falling below 1:35. BURN baby burn! Was glad to PR, but even more so when I realized it was a 5 second record instead of 1 with the 3:11.2.
