50 C2B

Went to the 4:30 class.

Warm-up – 12:00

  • 250m Row
  • 5 Strict Pull-ups
  • 8 Bar Taps
  • 8 Burpees

Took my sweet time. Got through 3 rounds + 250 meters.

Gymnastics Test

  • 50 C2B Pull-ups

I’ve never tried this many chest-to-bar pull-ups straight. Thought sets of 5 would be good and I was able to get 8 sets before I went 3-2 and 5 singles. Finished in 2:40. Really got me breathing heavy.

Conditioning

  • 1,500m Row
  • 50 Thrusters (75#)
  • 25 Bar-facing Burpees

Just terrible. I even paced out the row, taking 6:10 (slow!), thinking the thrusters and burpees would be bad. I wasn’t prepared for how much I couldn’t breathe. Did my first set of 10 thrusters and quickly decided to go for sets of 5 and try to keep rests short. Well, the rest were not short. I pushed a final set of 10 to finish after 6×5. The burpees were another world of hurt. After 10, with it still being over 50% of the way I told myself to pick it up and get the damn thing over with. Still wasn’t moving fast by any standard but moved with a little purpose. Finished in 13:25.

Thrusters and burpees are bad enough, but then that long row to start is just nasty.

Accessory – 3 Sets

  • 10/10 Half Kneeling Bottoms-up KB Press (26#)
  • 10 Ring Rows
  • 1:00 Plank

No issues with my right shoulder. I couldn’t do those presses a few weeks ago, so it seems to have healed up.

Definitely need the rest day tomorrow.

Hold It

Went to the 4:30 class.

Warm-up – 3 Sets

  • 20 PVC Passes
  • 20 Plyo Lunges
  • 10 Good Mornings (PVC)
  • 10 Jumping Jacks

Strength – Shoulder Press + Push Press

  • 6+6 @ 45#
  • 6+6 @ 95
  • 3+3 @ 115
  • 3+3 @ 135
  • 3+3 @ 145
  • 3+3 @ 150
  • 3+3 @ 155
  • 3+3 @ 160

Felt pretty good.

Conditioning

8:00 AMRAP

  • 8 Deadlifts (135#)
  • 8 Bar-facing Burpees

Haven’t done any type of deadlift in several weeks so I stayed light. Got through 8+12.

Midline

  • MAX Plank

Class was doing Tabata, so I did my usual long hold. Set a 28 second PR by holding for 6 minutes.

Not Today

We went in later hoping there would be more room for us to use the rig and some barbells.

Warm-up

  • Bottom Squat Hold
  • Arm Circles
  • Shoulder Stretching
  • 5 OHS (45#)

Didn’t really do much.

Open 14.2/15.2

Every 3 minutes for as long as possible complete:

  • From 0:00-3:00, 2 rounds of:
    • 10 OHS (95#)
    • 10 C2B pull-ups
  • From 3:00-6:00, 2 rounds of:
    • 12 OHS (95#)
    • 12 C2B pull-ups
  • From 6:00-9:00, 2 rounds of:
    • 14 OHS (95#)
    • 14 C2B pull-ups
  • Etc., following same pattern until you fail to complete both rounds

One of my least favorite Open workouts but I was confident I could set a PR to beat my best of getting through 14-14-8. I decided to wear my grips because I didn’t want to take any chances of ripping going into the first workout of the Open.

Right off the bat I was having trouble with pull-ups! It didn’t help my grips seemed to be slipping all over the place, but that was a minor annoyance compared to not being able to string together any real sets. Maybe I was fatigued from the muscle-ups yesterday?

I got through 12-12-12-4 and wasn’t even tired. I just could not do fucking pull-ups. My chest-to-bars have been feeling pretty good lately too, so this had to be some kind of fluke. My overhead squats are slow as shit, but weren’t the issue. Disappointed, but not going to beat myself up over it. We were supposed to rest at least 10 minutes before the next part of the session.

Conditioning

  • 100 Bar-facing Burpees

That’s weird…more burpees in the program!

Back in August 50 for time took me 3:29 and I don’t remember it being too bad. This was just boring though. Finished the first 50 at 4:04 and was only 15 seconds slower on the 2nd 50 to end at 8:23.

I was looking at some of my different burpee for time PRs and decided to calculate some ratios. Here’s something I wasn’t expecting… this time today is 2.407x my time for 50 bar-facing, while my best for 100 normal burpees is 2.478x my normal 50. Both ratios are pretty close, but I would expect to fatigue more over the course of 100 bar facing. Or maybe I’m just in better shape? If they had followed the same ration, my time today would have been 14 seconds slower, which is significant!

Accessory

3 Sets

  • 15 Prone GHD DB Rows (25# DBs)
  • 10 Back Extensions
  • 10s Hold

Wow, what a low back pump!

Hero Chipper

Was not looking forward to this session, which had a version of one of my least favorite workouts.

Warm-up – 3 Rounds

  • 9 Strict HSPU
  • 12 T2B
  • 15 Air Squats

Handstand push-ups are feeling so much better, its unreal. Just a few weeks ago I was dying out doing 3×5 strict. I skipped out on the deadlift work today to let my back rest some more so I did my own thing for the warm-up and then some bench. I’ve definitely gotten used to the extra grip on the bar for toes-to-bars using my chalked up grips. I was falling off after 4 reps today when I wasn’t wearing them! Did all sets unbroken though by regripping through each set.

Bench Press

  • 10×45#
  • 2x5x95
  • 5×135
  • 5×165
  • 5×185
  • 5×205
  • 2x5x225
  • 5×235

If I had known that was only 5 pounds shy of matching my PR for 5 I would have gone for 245.

Conditioning

10 Rounds

  • 1:00
    • 10 cal Row
    • Max bar-facing Burpees
  • 1:00 Rest

Turned out not to be ad bad as expected. The minute of rest was really nice. I did 12-9-8-8-8-9-9-9-10-11 burpees. So many burpees lately; another 93 today.

“Chipper DT”

Ugh!! I do not do well with “DT” so was not excited to see this come up. The hang power cleans always trip me up so I was afraid of what 45 in a row would feel like.

  • 60 Deadlifts (155#)
  • 45 Hang Power Cleans
  • 30 S2OH

I did 15-15-10 and then 3 more sets (of what, I don’t remember) to finish the deadlifts. My hamstrings and low back were pretty fired up at that point. I had no idea what to try for the cleans so I experimented for my first few sets. I quickly realized that taking the bar down and bouncing it off my legs just above my knee used less explosive energy than trying to stay more upright and bounce it high off my legs. I think I mostly did sets of 4 or 5. The cleans were still the worst part but seemed much easier than even having to do the 9 at a time in regular DT. I think I mostly did 5s on the jerks. It’s all a little blurry. Finished at 11:30, which is only about 1:30 slower than my best for the actual workout. Didn’t feel nearly as bad either, even after the other work we’d done already. Kind of makes me excited to give DT a real shot now. I think I could smoke my PR. Pretty cool variation though.

Adjustments

Didn’t have a great time trying to sleep last night, but my back isn’t as bad as it’s been some other times. I was still able to roll over in bed relatively well. I did do e-stim and ice both last night and this morning. Made it to the gym at 10am.

Warm-up

7 Rounds (Strict “Cindy”)

  • 5 Strict *Chin-ups/Pull-ups
  • 10 Push-ups
  • 15 Air Squats

I switched every round, which came out to 4 rounds of chin-ups and 3 rounds of pull-ups.

Gymnastics

Yesterday I skipped out on what was supposed to be an EMOM up to 40 total muscle-ups, so wanted to get in some volume today. Decided to try bar muscle-ups, which I haven’t done in a long time.

  • E30S – 5 Rounds
    • 2 Bar Muscle-ups
  • E30S – 20 Rounds
    • 1 Bar Muscle-up

I had on my grips, but they turned out to be too grippy with as much chalk as I had on them. I still struggle stringing these together because I overgrip the bar on the swing down and do this weird thing with my knees up. After 5 sets I took off the grips and switched to singles. No problems getting up there, I just need to work on stringing them together and improving my kip cycle. As a comparison, two years ago I did 21 doubles going 45 seconds without failure. I had been working on the movement more back then though.

Conditioning

6 Sets

  • 400m Run Row
  • 1:1 Work/Rest

I fucked up looking at my average pace instead of time, so ended up taking an extra 20 seconds of rest each round. Whoops! My times were 1:21.4, 1:21.4, 1:21.3, 1:21.3, 1:21, and 1:18.8 with 500m/pace averages all under 1:42.

21-18-15-12-9-6-3

  • Assault Bike cals Weighted Step-ups (20”, 20# DBs)
  • Bar-facing Burpees

This was programmed with a 12 minute time cap and then do max reps 225# deadlift in the remaining time. Yeah…right! Took me 13:24 and pretty sure if we had an Assault Bike it would have taken me even longer. I picked step-ups at a substitute because I wanted something that would fatigue the legs similar to an air bike. It did the trick because the jumps over the bar were a lot tougher and never stopping on the step-ups kept the heart rate up.

Actually felt ok for me compared to what I remember 16.5 feeling like with the thrusters instead of step-ups. Kind of curious what I’d do in that workout now, but I don’t care to find out. Just like I said after doing it as 14.5, I never want to do that workout again. 🙂

That completes 5 weeks of the Hybrid Performance Method program and I’m still loving it. Thinking back on this week I did 86 (40 strict) handstand push-ups, 153 toes-to-bars, 60 (30 ring & 30 bar) muscle-ups, 174 bar-facing burpees, 140 push-ups, and 35 strict pull/chin-ups. My gymnastics should be better for the Open than they’ve ever been.

Work-Rest

Feeling a bit tired today even though I got a great night of sleep. In later at 6pm.

Back Squat

Add 0-5-10 pounds on to last week.

  • 8×45#
  • 8×155
  • 8×225
  • 4×255
  • 3x8x285

I added 10# and it was rougher than I’d like. My quad does not feel very good.

Snatch

Work up to a 1RM.

  • 2x3x45#
  • 3×95
  • 2×135
  • 2×155
  • 2×175
  • 1×195
  • Miss-make @ 205
  • Miss 215
  • Miss 225

Wasn’t there today. The 215 really crashed on me and 225 was way out front.

Barbell Cycling

E90S – 6 Sets

  • 6 TnG Power Snatches (135#)

Was surprised to see it bumped up to 6 sets this week. Wasn’t an issue, but my thumbs got a little beat up from re-hook gripping the bar every rep. It was taking me 13-14 seconds per set. Really excited to test out “Grace” and “Isabel” sometime soon.

Conditioning

Alternating between 1:00 of work and 1:00 of rest until finished with the following chipper…

  • 90 Bar Facing Burpees
  • 60 Overhead Squats (95#)
  • 30 Muscle-ups

I scaled the OHS down from the Rx 115# because I was expecting the muscle-ups to take me a long time.

Wow! The rests kept the intensity high. I did 19-17-17-16-16 burpees and the final 5 plus 10 squats. I’ll take that consistency! To finish the squats I did 10-9, 10-8, and 13 to get a little extra rest. In fact I took an extra 1:00 of rest instead of just one here before getting up on the rings. Looking back, I wish I had even just got up there for a set of 3 after the halfway point of the work minute. Oh well, the muscle-ups went much better than I expected. I went 3-3, 4-3, 4-3, 3-1, 2-2, and 2. I really wasn’t planning on getting much more than 3 or 4 per minute heading in.

I wasn’t having a problem getting up over the rings, but my dip started to give out when I only got 3-1. I don’t think I’m kipping the dips much, if at all, and then when I need to kip I’m all out of whack. I’ve never done that volume of reps in a WOD, let alone at the end, so I’m seeing some nice progress.

Finished at 29:07 on the clock. And… wrecked! It was coming up on 2 hours of work so we decided to skip the 80 T2B EMOM. Grip and hands were pretty beat up already and that was enough work for one day. Maybe I’ll get in the reps tomorrow because I definitely need them. Have been eating a bit better, but I needed fuel after this one so made a stop at McDonald’s on the way home.

Mostly Burpees

My shoulders are feeling rough from yesterday and my hands pretty much just ache. In at 5:30 with the boys.

Warm-up

  • Bottom Squat Hold
  • Shoulder Stretching
  • 10 Reverse Hypers (50#)

Skipped the assigned warm-up again. It’s usually overkill with hold long we are already spending in the gym.

Deadlift

Do 5×7 @ 65% and then a 20RM, adding 5-10# over last week.

  • 14×45#
  • 7×155
  • 7×245
  • 7×295
  • 5x7x325#
  • 20×275

The 20 rep felt much better this week. The heavier sets felt fine too. Don’t get my wrong, I didn’t want to go another set when I was gone, but I didn’t feel the burn quite like I did last week. Back still tightened up a bit.

We decided to skip out on what was supposed to be reverse Tabata Assault Bike. We don’t have bikes anyway and the upcoming WOD would be plenty.

Conditioning

18:00 AMRAP

  • 40 Bar-facing Burpees
  • 4 Squat Cleans at (225#)
  • 30 Bar-facing Burpees
  • 8 Squat Cleans at (205#)
  • 20 Bar Facing Burpees
  • 12 Squat Cleans at (185#)
  • 10 Bar Facing Burpees
  • 16 Squat Cleans at (135#)

As usual I spent too much time staring at the bar when I should have been picking it back up. I was never in any danger of missing, but I didn’t really want to get back to the burpees either. I lollygagged taking the weight off and getting started on the final set of cleans too. I did however do those touch-n-go to finish with 6 of the cleans at 135#. If I were to do this again, I’d finish and get back to the burpees no problem. I need to lose 10 pounds, which will have a significant impact on my movements and fatigue.

Looking forward to the rest day tomorrow and Dad being here for dinner.

Castro threw out a bomb today on Instagram and it’s already creating a stir with affiliates who will need to buy dumbbells. It’s probably safe to assume he’s giving the men’s (50) and women’s (35) loading, but what about scaled and other divisions? I guess it’s easier to come up with dumbbells than it is Concept2 rowers like a couple of years ago. My bet is on dumbbell thrusters. 😷🤒😪🤕

My Favorite Exercise

After waking up yesterday, I knew I needed a rest day. Working out 5 days in a row had me feeling beat up. So I swapped with today. Went in to the gym and did the workout solo since the guys stuck to the schedule and did the workout yesterday.

Warm-up

9:00 EMOM (alt)

  • 5 Strict HSPU
  • 7 Russian KBS (53#)
  • 9 GHD Sit-ups

Only half of the programmed 6 sets. Was planning to do 4 sets, but I was starting to over-extend and struggle with the handstand push-ups already so that was enough.

Deadlift

Do 5×5 @ 75% and then 20RM starting @ 50% this first time.

  • 10x20kg
  • 5×70
  • 5×100
  • 5×130
  • 5×145
  • 5x5x155
  • 20×120

The 5×5 was only at about 66% of my all-time PR, but I can’t pull that right now so have scaled back. I did go at 51% of my all-time 515# high for the 20 rep though, which I can handle better. Was a sneaky set and felt great until my posterior chain lit up in the last 5 reps.

Conditioning

4 Sets

  • 500m Row
  • 1:1 Rest

1:45 – 1:44.7 – 1:44 – 1:42.4

Goal was a 1:45 average so happy to be able to do negative splits.

7:00 AMRAP

  • 10 Bar-facing Burpees
  • 6 SDLHP (115#)

I couldn’t tell you the last time I did a Sumo Deadlift High-pull. I avoid them like the plague because I think they are a stupid movement. Guess I was doing them today! Kept a pretty steady pace and finished 5 rounds plus 9 burpees.

Fifteens

Was thinking about doing “Linda” to finish out the year just like in 2015, but we weren’t up for it today and my back has been a little rough this week so would not have been the best idea. I actually didn’t even get out of bed until almost 10:30. I can’t remember the last time I was in bed past 10. Worked out with Bryan and Doug at noon. Did some bottom squat holds and shoulder stretching to warm-up.

Gymnasty

15:00 EMOM (alt)

  • 5 Strict Pull-ups
  • 7 Strict Ring Dips
  • 10 Pistols

Been a long time since doing a pistol. Always rough to get the feel for them again but then after 10 reps or so it comes back.

Conditioning

15:00 AMRAP

  • 20 T2B
  • 10 Bar-facing Burpees
  • 20 Hang Power Snatches (75#)
  • 10 Step-ups (24″)

Went much smoother than we expected. I surprised myself by being able to stick to sets of 4 toes to bars the entire way. Went 8-6-6 on the snatches and should have tried 11-9 or something like that. I figured I’d end up doing step-ups instead of box jumps and when I got to that movement in the first round it was an easy decision. Finished 3 rounds plus the T2B and burpees. Might have been able to get in one snatch, but collapsing to the ground felt like a better idea.

Feels good to be back into some kind of consistency. I think I’m going to join Bryan on the Hybrid Performance WOD program starting this week, though still finish out these last few weeks of the Thruster Attack.

Little Lifting

Went in for the 4:30 class, but was there early so got in my lifting instead of doing front squats with class.

Split Jerk

  • 5x20kg
  • 5×40
  • 3×60
  • 2×75
  • 1×85
  • 1×92
  • 1×97
  • EMOM
    • 5x1x102

Felt like I needed to crack my back in one spot and I just could not get it.

Push Press

  • 3x3x87kg

Couldn’t believe that was it for the lifting today. Deload week is kind of nice.

Conditioning

14:00 EMOM (alt)

  • 15 Wall Balls
  • 10 Bar-facing Burpees

Started getting rough after the 3rd or 4th round because I wasn’t slowing down on the burpees. The rhythm I figured out a few months ago is money!

Midline

4 Rounds

  • 15 Sit-ups
  • 10 Shotguns
  • 20s Plank

Even got in ab work to go with the lifting since it was part of the workout! Finished in 5:59. The shotguns were bothering that spot in my back that wouldn’t release.
