Still out in Long Beach. Much needed rest day yesterday for my shoulders. Back to CrossFit Intersect this morning.

First time doing “Amanda” for me. I’ve wanted to give her a shot for a while now. I fell through the rings right off the bat on the first rep. What the fuck! You should have seen the faces on the coaches. Knocked out 3 sets of 3 after that. I don’t remember if I started out with a set of 2 or 3 for the 7 or if it was all singles. I did do a set of 2 to start the 5 and then 3 singles. All snatches were singles. I had 4 snatches left when the time ran out. I should have just finished and taken less rest time for “Annie”. I’ll finish next time I do it!

Just not tight on that last attempt. Got to the bottom and dumped the bar forward on the first rep. That was a 0.5″ PR for the two single seated box jumps.

When I did this in 2012, I was only a few months into CrossFit and had never snatched more than 95#. Took me over 3 minutes of attempts to finally make one at 135#. I ended up getting 6 reps. Today I got through the first 60 reps and then 8 with 165#.

All The Burpees

Was up late for the CFi Halloween party last night, but made it out to 989 CrossFit at 9am for a charity event to raise money for MS. It was 350 burpees and you could do it as a team. I went solo for a challenge.

My goal was to finish under 30:00. I figured I’d do 12 reps every minute and then rest until the next minute. I was slowly getting less and less rest time, but I kept at this for 20 rounds. Then I took the next minute off. Did 10 reps to get me to 250 so I could just count up to 100. Did 2 sets of 20, then a set of 12 I think, and not sure what next. I had to bust out the last 25 or 30 (it was a bit of a blur, but pretty sure I had 25 reps to go with 2:00 to make it) without stopping to reach my goal, but I did it! Finished at 29:45. It was a real mental battle for those last 100 reps. I kept negotiating with a quitter’s attitude, trying to convince myself that I’d be happy with 31 or 32 minutes. Glad I pushed through.

Drove back over to Saginaw and did some overhead squats with Kevin.

I started out just outside of a jerk grip and used that up until I lost the third rep with 135#. Then I moved out a bit to finish the set and same for 155#. For 175# I was about half way between my jerk and snatch grips. That last set was rough to keep stable because my shoulders were pretty beat from the burpees.

Up early to start Super Sunday at CFi at 8:30 with Alex and Brent. I did Crossover Symmetry Activation and then some light stretching.

I wasn’t even thinking, but that’s a standing box jump PR. I’d done 47.5″ seated, but never that high standing. Squats felt good with my back. Slowly building it back up. Haven’t attempted 300+ in weeks.

I think last week was much worse, so hopefully means this work is paying off. I really enjoy being able to think about improving different parts of the squat and press during all of these reps. Pushing the bar back on the press in having a good carryover to my other overhead lifting movements. I did 8 reps every work period except for the final one when I busted out 10.

Brent talked me into going over to Survival Fitness for the 11am class for a partner workout with him. Sure, why not! It was a big class with 30 people. We formed 2 lines and did a dynamic warm-up of stuff like zombie kicks, lunge & twist, butt kicks, bear crawls, power skips, and I don’t remember what else. Then teams split up into the different areas and we rotated between 3 different 10 minute workouts.

We were cruising for the most part with ring rows slowing us down a bit. I started us off, we got through the entire ladder, both did another round of 10, I got through the round of 9, and then Brent got 8 of 9 OHS.

I started off on the AD, Brent came at my from the other side of the building for 40′ of the burpee broad jumps, and then I did the second half. Then he was ready to go on the AD and we kept using that same strategy throughout, which worked really well. We got through 9 rounds of the AD (so I did 5) and then Brent was one burpee broad jump short of getting us 40′.

Then I was planning to do an EMOM with a double squat snatch with 165#. Missed the second attempt in the first minute and then missed another attempt at it. So I started over. 🙂

I had one miss on the 2nd rep in round 6 but took a breath, concentrated, and hit a second make right after the miss. From that point on I really had to focus. My thoughts were on being explosive through the second pull and finishing strong to punch the bar overhead. I think a lot of my misses are because I’m not aggressive with the bar at the end and I lose tension.

Walked about a half mile after.

Up to 135 with pinkies on the inner knurl marks and then after than I had to slowly keep moving them out. With 195# I think my index finger was just outside of the 2nd knurl marks. Still much closer than a snatch grip though.

I let Kevin talk me into running “another mile”, which fucking turned in to nearly 3 miles. A lot of time to practice running technique improvements.

Left calf is still really sore, but I’m able to move around on it, so that’s a good sign. Went to CFi at 9 for some lifting. Started out with Crossover Symmetry Activation and some snatch positioning with an empty bar.

Figured I’d try out some waves today. I guess I’d count the first 6 lifts as one big wave since it wasn’t a drop, so didn’t have a miss until the middle of the last wave. Getting the bar plenty high enough as usual. Called it a day after 3 misses. Glad to have hit 185 a couple of times and 190 once. Calf didn’t seem to affect anything.

Went 11.52 km, keeping RPM between 45 and 50. After doing a little reading on zone 1 training, I’d been going a little hard previously.

Up from 5 last week. Kept losing the kip after the 4th rep again, but tried a few things that helped it here and there. Still needs work.

Pistols were tough. Mostly broke them up into 6-4. I should have stuck to the 18# since today was the first time I’ve ever tried a weighted pistol. Did all of the KBS unbroken and finished in 10:30. After picking myself up off the ground I walked about 200m. Got home and put in a little more work.

Took me 4:41. Push-ups help up surprisingly well. The GHDs got horrible though.

Setting a Baseline

We didn’t get to do the Adventure Park in the trees yesterday because there was thunder in the area. Knees are feeling the squatting from cleans yesterday but already better than they felt last night. Headed over to CFi at noon. Started with Crossover Symmetry Activation.

Went to the CFi 9am, but I should have stayed in bed! Didn’t wake up until almost 7:30, which is pretty rare, so I’m a little beat up. But I’m glad I got in for the workout and I’m going to push it a little this week since I’ll be away on vacation next week with a break from weights.

Kevin asked me to come up with something and I had planned on doing this one over the weekend, so figured why not. It’s a lunch time workout done by the CrossFit Level 1 Seminar Staff, which I did over a year ago in 14:03. Rx is 115/75#. I was definitely not feeling it today, but pushed through for a PR in 13:34. The overhead stuff all killed me and I was absolutely dying. Way too much rest between sets of the pressing movements. Front squats were 10-9-6 and I did the back squats without dropping the bar.

I jumped on the rower after catching my breath and did a 2k at a slow pace in 9:52 to flush out my legs.

Some days you just have to show up and do work.
